Tamariu – Catalonia (Spain)

       LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION

Situated in the north of the municipality of Palafrugell (in the Baix Empordà), Tamariu is characterised by its narrow streets and wild beach, set between rocks and trees, which draw an extremely picturesque landscape (1). Its population of little more than 300 inhabitants grows exponentially during the summer (2). Although it had traditionally been a fishing village, since the 1980s it has become a first-rate summer holidaymaker and tourism centre (3).

       BEACHES

As with the majority of the Costa Brava’s beaches, Tamariu’s is made up of thick grain sand and orthoclase gravel; it also contains three more beaches: dels Lliris, la playa Gran (of thick grains) and one pebble and freshwater beach. The nearby coves of de Cabres, Es Portió, Aigua Xelida and Marquesa are unique in the area.

      ACTIVE TOURISM

The paths near the beaches that allow one to stroll among pine trees and dive into coves, are perfect to calmly discover the territory and reach neighbouring localities, such as Llafranc. Adventure lovers will not want to miss out on activities like scuba diving, sailing, kayaks, or the chance to paddle surf and play beach volleyball.

    CUISINE

Palafrugell’s cuisine is one of the most varied of the coast of Girona, and products from the sea are never missing: fish and shellfish are the indisputable protagonists of a large part of this genuine cuisine, without forgetting the rice dishes, the jewel in the crown of the majority of the area’s restaurants.
